hooking up multiple speakers to my stereo?
i have the sony hifi MHC-EC99i. i have the original 2 speakers and subwoofer hooked up to it, along with 2 other sony mega bass speakers that i just twisted in with the original speakers hooked up. i have it hooked up to my ipod, pc, tv cable box, and the built in cd player and radio get used often. but about halfway turned up it will cut off. its about time to beef it up some, so i got 2 150 watt mitsubushi floor speakers. so i know that i need to get an amp and all that crap to make it work. bye the way i'm on a high schoolers budget. i need to know what to get so it doesnt cut off and what to get so i can hook up multiple speakers. answers will be a appreciated.
ps, dont tell me its not possible because i know it possible, ive seen it done before, but i just need to know the correct stuff to get,(amp, and something to hook up multiple speakers to)

I sympathize but your mini-hi fi system is not going to ever be able to give you wall shaking sound. That said, you can certainly improve on the sound from the stock Sony speakers (although only within the limits of the mini system amplifier).
You are asking for trouble by hooking up extra speakers unless you a) know what impedance the amplifier can drive and b) wire the speakers so as to keep total impedance within a safe range.
From the sound of it more than likely your system is shutting down because the protection circuit is tripping. This would indicate the amp doesn't like what it's being asked to do. Keep it up and you are going to cause damage, or have a system continually in protect mode.
Note that your system is rated for 8 ohm speakers (link). So 8 ohms will be the impedance of the stock speakers. While most speakers you might buy are 8 ohm, 4, 6 or even 16 ohm speakers are sold.
If you wire speakers in parallel (Google it) overall impedance drops below that of either individual speaker, and many amplifiers (particularly cheaper ones) can't handle the low impedance load. The problem gets worse the lower the overall impedance.
On the other hand, wiring in series raises the impedance and this results in lower amplifier power / less loudness. I'm not going to explain wiring extra speakers safely since I don't think that is your best option.
Before turning to recommendations, on another point ... a 150 watt speaker rating is NOT an indication of how loud it will be ... it's a rating of how much power it can take. As an aside, Sony and Mitsubishi speakers are not on anyones list of "good" speakers.
Final point, speaker efficiency (again, Google it) varies widely and higher efficiency speakers require much less power to generate the same loudness.
So, what should you do? I see three main options. In order of increasing cost ... if you want to increase volume don't add speakers, look for speakers to REPLACE the stock models. Look for ones rated at 8 ohms, high efficiency (e.g. >92 DB @ 1 watt), and good frequency response. Klipsch is a good brand and many are high efficiency. You can probably find some good used ones for under $75 each (I have a pair over 20 years old that I bought used for $100 that perform well in a stereo setup).
You wrote you have a subwoofer, but don't mention type/model. That said, replacing your present subwoofer with a better powered unit (e.g. built in 300 watt amplifier) would undoubtedly help sound even more.
The ultimate solution (but the most expensive) is to replace the Sony mini system with a stand alone receiver (combination of a tuner and amplifier) AND speakers as described above (including a better subwoofer).
