Does an audio Coaxial cable look exactly the same as a standard RCA?
I purchased yesterday an amp unit and a dvd unit. The amp brought with it what looked like a standard RCA cable. When I connected the DVD to the amp through coaxial using that cable, the sound that we got in our living room was short of what we where shown at the store.
Maybe it's that the demo cd used as a sales pitch to us had exactly what's needed to make the two sub woofers knock your socks off. I tested the units with a star wars movie, thinking it would be a good tests subject, but it wasn't the same.
So I'm wondering about that cable. Is there any obvious visible difference between an audio coaxial and a regular rca?
It's not the cable that is making you hear a difference.
The digital coaxial cable is just a 75 ohm rated wire with RCA connectors on either end. You can use a regular RCA audio cable and most are rated 75 ohms. Running the short distance between your DVD player and receiver isn't going to make much of a difference.
The difference in sound you are hearing is a combination of two things most likely.
1) The room they used for the demo was geared for the the best performance. The room the system is in has just as much impact as the system itself. System can be optimized to give great sound at a certain position too (the sweet spot).
2) The equipment is not exactly the same. If the speakers and subs were different you really can't compare to the demo. They may have had $10,000 in high end speakers and the same in high end subwoofers.
If the receiver/amp you bought has an auto calibration mode (Audyssey, YPAO, etc) then run it though and it may correct a lot of room acoustic anomalies. You should also ensure that you have your speakers in the ideal position (see second link).
You could also buy room treatments, better speakers, better subs, etc. That can be a never ending game though.
